  Your driveshaft should have approximately 3/4" free play. If you have two shafts put each one into the transmission until it stops. Then pull back 3/4" and see which one lines up into the yoke of the rear end.

  It's a little tricky to measure on a convertible without two people and a lift. The chassis parts book shows different assemblies for Fordomatic and standard shift but the round center section (part #4605) appears to be the same. Also, with the exception of station wagons, all '51 Fords take the same assembly. So, I measured my standard shift Victoria and got 4' 5 1/4" for the round section (between the end caps). I also got the same measurement on an extra that I think came out of a '50 coupe.
