Topic: Distributor difference

I want to know if there is any other difference except the caps and the rotors for the distributors for 42-44 vs 45-48?
Is it possible to use the crab cap on the later distributer which has inner and outer caps?

The clips that hold the 2 caps to the distributor also have to be changed. The two piece cap has much longer clips. You can get these clips at most aftermarket suppliers. The plug wires & coil wire usually have boots on the crab cap. Brillman has the boots. If your going to use the NAPA cap it is advisable to remove the distributor and when converted turn the distributor by hand and make sure the rotor does not hit one of the cap contacts. If it does very slightly remove some of the cap contact until the rotor no longer touches. I believe Ford Spec. is 0.003" clearance.

I have a '47 with a crab unit. As 40 Coupe noted, the NAPA rotors typically seem too large and strike the inner cap studs. I ruined a NAPA rotor and crab cap the first time. Bubba noted the problem to me.
