Topic: Skip thermostats?

Some flathead owner say you can skip the thermostats if you only use the car in summer. The water flow would be better without thermostats. My question is: can it get any problem without themostats except a little bit longer time to get a good operating temp?

Engines run better, more efficiently, and last longer at a minimum if not constant operating temperature rather than wildly fluctuating. That is why all engine manufacturers for almost 100 years have always installed thermostats. The corrosive moisture in the crankcase at start up is more quickly evaporated and removed with thermostats. Here is a study I did comparing no thermostats with thermostats: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=113979

  Thank you OH.

Old Henry's research is very informative. It appears that a well designed thermostat will not significantly reduce coolant flow.

I believe having thermostat(s) is very important to reduce the thermal cycling and get the engine up to temp to burn off stuff in the crankcase. Old Henry, thank you for posting your detailed testing over many days. I am still bringing my 47 Tudor on line and will need to check if it has thermostats. When I get to that point I will start another thread if I have questions. - Bob
