Topic: # 1 firing position

Working on my 53 distributor installation. I have seen two different diagrams as far as rotor position for #1 cylinder. One has the rotor pointing towards the generator, and the other has the rotor pointing opposite. Any recommendations or preference? Thanks. I have mine pointing at the generator right now. Maybe my new cap will have #1 identified.

Make sure #1 piston is on the compression stroke and at TDC. (use the mark on the crank pulley as reference) #1 is on the passenger side in the front. 2,3,&4 are also on the same side. You can then install the distributor with the rotor pointing where ever you want. Where ever it points is the location on the distributor cap where you want to install the plug wire for #1 cylinder. Then just follow the firing order around the rest of the cap. 1 5 4 8 6 3 7 2 clockwise. #5 is the front cylinder on the drivers side.

There are 2 types of wiring brackets and I believe that the 53 uses the 0BA-12111 bracket where the vacuum advance must point towards the left side of the engine and the rotor would point towards the outside of the engine. The cap has a detent on it so it can only be installed one way and the no 1 wire would go in the hole closest to the bottom front of the distributor.

The other bracket is for the 49 cars and trucks.
