According to the serial numbers on Vanpelts site, the car is a 1946 Ford or Mercury. They both used the same engine, so the serial numbers are intermixed. We would need photos of the front end and dash board in order to make a better identification.

Nickguinn - to Tom's point the serial number you referenced falls into the classification of a late '46 Ford or Mercury as referenced on Van Pelt's site and other credible resource documentation. Note some of the very late '46 serial numbers/inventory were carried over into and completed in early '47 and titled as '47s (my '47 is such an example and has a somewhat later '46 serial number than yours). This attribute of this specific period in time is discussed in the '41-'48 Ford Book.

Suggest you also look at the window bugs and date codes on the speedometer, radio and clock in your sleuthing exercise (on the bugs - if you still have any or all of the original door/window glass) and add that to the document on Van Pelt's site as part of your research data for registration/titling validation. If the date codes on the speedometer, radio and/or clock are from mid-to-late December of '46 and the window bugs indicate Jan '47 then you are very likely looking at a car that should be titled as a '47. If not, then '46.

Post a pic - perhaps someone here can help you better ID what you have visually.

EDIT - also study the Appendix 'D' entitled 'Evolutionary Changes' of the '41-48 Ford book and determine which of the changes you car does and does not have as this will help you 'hone-in' further if necessary.

Steve
