My ring and pinion whines a little on deceleration and on acceleleration even tho I had a repudable man(who you all know and I refrain from naming) rebuild it. I'd hate to have to take it out again to send it out to be redone and maybe still whine.Joe's Antique Auto parts sells 600W gear oil for trannies and rears. Will this quiet it? (I have heard for years that in the old days unscrupulous used car dealers put sawdust and/or banana peels in the rear to quiet them, so why not thicker gear oil?) I would suggest that you contact the re-builder and discuss with him first. 600W is for pre 1930's trans and rears. Never in a 1950's trans or rear. I use Sta Lube 85-90 GL-4 in the trans and 140 in the rear of my 1951. This message was edited by 39 Ken on 2-16-17 @ 4:29 AM

I agree with Ken. 600W "oil" was used in Model A's because anything else wouldn't stay in the gear boxes. The usual leak on the transmission was the rear end of the countershaft where it exits the case. At one time there was an aftermarket device sold to cover that area. 600W was actually a kind of asphaltic solution. I have used it sometimes in the steering box, if it has a big leak. It will withstand the heat from the exhaust manifold that usually cooks gear oil into rock. As for rear end whine, it is common when coasting, but hard to hear unless the gear mesh is very loose. Ken's suggestion of 140W gear oil is also my choice. It is getting hard to find now, but still available. I use it in the overdrive in my '47 which is a bit noisy when engaged.

I got the 600 oil from Joes Antique Auto Parts in Massachusetts and he said it's not really 600w, tho it says so, That's just the designation.and it's good for 1946 - 1951?? My other 1950 sedan makes no noise pulling or decellerating. This one does?? Regards, Steve Lee

I bought Sta Lube 140 wt GL4 gear oil at NAPA a couple of weeks ago. It cost about $35 for a gallon. They had it in quarts at about $12.
