That access cover appears to allow a view of the Ford Number stamped on the Transmission. I have something on my 1937, but it is not a cover per se but a flap that can be pried up to allow viewing. . . . 78-730B This message was edited by TonyM on 2-8-17 @ 6:40 AM

Early 35 Fords also had the lubrication cup for the throw out bearing on the inspection cover for the transmission clutch pressure plate, as did 34 fords. The early 35 transmission cover provides easy access to the cup. It should be open as you have it. You can replace the inspection cover with one like 34 but without the hose connection to the throw out bearing if your bearing is sealed. Making everything appear as original. IF you want to "make it like Henry intended", a Ford 8N Tractor throw-out bearing and grease hose assembly will allow you to periodically grease your throw-out via that access hole. These are still available from vintage tractor supply sources.

I've never seen a '35 transmission cover with an inspection hole that large, even on the early production year 35's that I own, but I guess that could have been the very early ones built at the startup of '35 production. Attached is a picture of the '35 trans cover that looks like all the ones I have ever seen. It's my understanding that this openning was, or could be used to check the serial numbers stamped on the top flat of transmission bell without the need to remove toe boards and trans cover. John

In 35 there were several versions of the early covers I believe this is one of the very early ones

Another notice the cover is one piece stamping so there is no seam. There is an additional D-nut for the toe board attachment. This cover came to me with a metal LH toe board attached. This message was edited by 40 Coupe on 2-10-17 @ 2:10 PM

My earliest '35 is a deluxe tudor FB sedan, built in February, 1935, so it's really not that early relatively speaking. It did have the sheet metal drivers side toe board and a transmission cover with small inspection slot openning like the one I posted earlier in this thread. Not sure if the trans cover on this car is one or two piece construction. I find I can always learn something new on these old Fords. John
