Hi All, Finally working on our '40 Ford 4-door (w/suicide doors). In prepping for body repairs, it was mentioned there is asbestos in the vehicle, making body stripping more difficult. Anyone heard of this..?? My research to date only shows a '42 with an asbestos clutch plate assembly. Any comments would be appreciated.

Ford applied a sound deadened, tar like material, to the bottom inside of the doors and many other places inside the car. It appears to have been put on by a brush. I do not know if anyone has done an analysis of the material to see if it contains any asbestos. Other wise I am unaware of any possible asbestos in the body.

Geneva, Your question indicates a concern for safety regarding asbestos in general. Be assured that asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral found in the earth, which poses no danger to humans in any form other than asbestos dust, which can lodge in the lungs. There is no danger from any product containing asbestos, unless and until it is disturbed, causing dust. A person standing on a street corner, breathing the dust produced by automobile clutches, brake shoes, and any of a hundred other sources, is exposed to less asbestos dust than is a child playing sandlot baseball. The only place that I am aware of within a '40 Ford that contains asbestos is the short hose that is between the hot air heater silencer and the tube below it. I am not aware of any asbestos within the sound deadening material that was sprayed on but I suppose the possibility exists. Regardless, if it is integral of the sound deadening, it would be nearly impossible to create any dust from it's removal. Mike"Kube" Kubarth

The only thing I can add is that some owner's used roofing asphalt/tar cement as an aftermarket sound deadener and until about 20 yrs ago it did contain asbestos fibers to bind and retard cracking of the asphalt. Although it is now illegal to use in most states, and as said here, in reality it is not considered dangerous unless disturbed. If you replace the material you find, I certainly recommend you use an elastomeric type material rather than an asphalt based product simply because asphalt based products contain acids that slowly eat-away the metal (metal roofs and flashings are damaged by asphalt coatings). The original brake linings contained asbestos. Many years ago it was customary to clean off the brakes after the hubs and drums were removed by blasting them with an air hose. This filled the air with dangerous particles. At our shop we use the water hose, both to clean the area and contain any dust. Many years ago when I worked for a Ford dealer, there wasn't much thought given to the danger of asbestos. Coupled with smoking, it took the lives of many of my friends from lung cancer.

Bob, I don't care to think of how many (100's) of brake jobs I had done in similar fashion - just an air hose. Those were the days a guy could purchase asbestos at any hardware store. It's a shame that the dangers of this materail were well known by then but not openly told to the public.
