On my 48 Ford 2dr sedan, do I need a special tool to remove brake drum,or is their a alternative method, if I don"t qwn the tool.Tks John

The "short answer" is YES. You should "secure" the use of a KR Wilson A8V 156 Rear Hub Puller. These can be purchased from various suppliers, but most Club Members have access to one. If properly installed, your rear hub/drum will NOT just come off easily once the axle nut is removed. Attempting to use ANYTHING other than the above risks damage to the axle.

You do not need any special tool to rempove the front hubs, just needed for rear hubs. Tom

John, Get the right tool. Assuming the drums were torqued properly you need the tool. It is cheaper than replacing the axle. Mac Vanpelt rents the tool, http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_tools_forsale.htm . Try asking at your local V8 club and see if they have one that they will loan to members. maybe someone can fill in the details. or ixnay this method. I seem to remember an article in the V8 times about loosening the axle nut and driving the car in a circle to pop the wheel loose??

I've heard this also. Just my opinion but how much is enough and how much is not. As mentioned, any method other than using the proper tool can result in a broken or cracked axle and is not a good idea. If cracked, you probably won't notice it until you're underway at speed. Then the fun begins. In any case, be sure to use a tool that applies the pressure on the axle hub. Do not use one that attaches and pulls on the wheel studs which can result in a bent brake drum.
