BLOCK HAS 59 CAST INTO FLYWHEEL FLANGE.
WATER PUMPS IN BLOCK.

1946 through 1948 cylinder blocks are marked "59" or "59A" or "59L" or "59X" or "59Y" or "59Z" with raised letters cast into the top of the bell housing part of the block.

Your block is a 239 cubic-inch, 24-stud Ford with insert-bearings. If in good condition, it is desirable. Some of these also had hardened valve seats installed at the factory.

It would only be "correct" in a 46 to 48 Ford however.

I have come across blocks that are marked "59" and were 3 1/16 bore. 221CI. I'm told they were a ford replacement block

"Some of these had hardened valve seats installed at the factory"? I have never seen a 59A engine without them. I think the elimination of hardened valve seats came later in the last (8BA) series of the flathead.

I have read that the majority of the flat head V8's, possibly with the exception of the V8 60's, had hardened valve seats.
It is also my understanding that Ford did not start to phase out the hardened seats until the early '60's. Ford's thinking was that the quality of the fuels was better, therefore, hardened seats were not needed...
That really turned out to be a big mistake..

When lead was removed from gas. it was thought that this would result in a problem called "valve recession". Manufacturers went to hardened seats. We haven't seem much of that kind of problem. More typically we see valve seats that have been ground and reground over the years, and can't be resurfaced again. At our shop, we replace all valve seats in all blocks with our machine. If you find a 59A or B block that measures 3.16, check to see if the bores were sleeved. Ford rebuilders used sleeves in earlier blocks, and the factory used them if the block had a sand hole in a cylinder so the block could be salvaged.
