Topic: Convertible Top Wiring Diagram- 1941

  Has anyone got or can tell me where to find a diagram for the 1941 Ford Super Deluxe Convertible top? I have a few wiring diagrams but none show the top. This is different from other years in that the dash mounted switch powers an electric motor attached to a screw jack on each side. The harness runs from the dash switch to the rear, splits and is attached to a motor on each side. I am going to replace the motor/jack arrangement with a hydraulic/electric unit from Hydro-E.

  Tyree Harris has some wiring routing along with the color codes and may be able to supply a harness to help you out.

  We have used Hydro-Electric pumps in several cars, including my '47 ragtop. The light duty switch supplied was inadequate and resulted in very slow top movement due to voltage drop caused by the switch and under sized wiring between the switch and the pump mounted in the trunk in front of the spare tire. The pump operates by reversing the polarity to raise or lower the top. I designed and made a switchbox to control the pump. Now the top goes up and down like a new car. I'd be glad to share the diagram for those who want it.

  I was hoping to use the original switch which seemed to work OK until one motor burned out. I would appreciate having your diagram as I'm not sure what I'm into with the wiring. Thanks.

  The original hydraulic system used after 1941 used a starter motor to drive the pump, with the control operating a valve to select up or down. I used #8 wiring from the battery to the control box to get enough power. The wiring from the switch to the box is #12, and the switch is double pole-double throw with a spring loaded neutral. That circuit simply triggers the appropriate solenoids (two used for up and two for down) with the #8 feeding the solenoids output. The tricky part of the design is to feed either polarity to the pump itself to control direction. I will print out the diagram and photos and send them if desired.
