53 flathead oil pan gasket. Getting ready to install the oil pan. I have the rope seals seated in. The two piece oil pan gasket covers over the rope seals, that are in the block. Am I to trim the oil pan gasket where they meet the rope seals? It doesn't seem right that they would go over the top of the rope seals.

After further research, it appears that if the rope seals aren't flush in their mounting, I should trim the pan gasket, and if the rope seals are flush, then put the pan gasket over them. Off to work.

I think you should trim the rope seal about 1/16" of an inch proud and not flush with the block. Then install the oil pan seal as is. Someone correct me if that seems wrong but that's the way I do it..

Yes, that is the way. The ends of the rope seals must stand above the gasket surface to be compressed when the pan is tightened. Otherwise, it ill nearly always produce a leak.
