Topic: I.D. gas filler lid lock?

Grant    -- 01-08-2017 @ 12:43 PM
Happy New Year to everybody in the EFV8 Club.

Do any of you know what vehicles this new old stock 51A-18168 fuel tank filler lid lock accessory would have been intended for?

By the 51A prefix, I'm guessing 1946 and 1947 and 1948 Ford. And maybe would it fit 1942 as well?

How about Mercs? Would this lock assembly be useable on a 1942/1946/1947/1948 Mercury too?

LOL , I can now see why you asked the question, # is not listed in GB ,neither in the part #'s or accessorys section. I would assume it would fit all doors mentioned as long as they were all same shape and size. Again LOL I should have known better. Your not a newbi. ken ct USA

  Hmmmmm
According to the Ford Chassis Parts & Accessories Catalogue book April 1949 -- the part number 51A-18168 fits Ford passenger vehicles 1938 - 1948.
According to the Mercury Chassis Parts & Accessories Catalogue book March 1948 -- the part number 51A-18168 fits Mercury passenger vehicles 1941 - 1948. BUT only models 19A, 29A, 69M, 79M, 89M.
Now looking at the front of the book --19A is 1941, 29A is 1942, 69M is 1946, 79M is 1947, and 89M is 1948.

So, this helps you some.

Thank you, gentlemen. I had been unable to find a reference to this accessory in any of my FoMoCo books.

It seemed logical that the fuel tank filler lid would be similar on Mercury passenger cars as well.

For those of us in Canada, this lock will therefore also work on a Monarch.

Thoughts from anyone else, perhaps?

If you have a Chassis book --- the accessories are hidden in the back pages.

Don't have any parts info but looks just like the stock gas door lock on my '47 coupe.

If it fits a Ford from 41-48 it will also fit the Mercury as they use the same rear fenders

Ken, the Green Book only lists parts that were still available in 1950. There are many parts that are not listed in it that are in the parts catalog near the year of manufacture.

I used a key lock on the filler door of my '47 the was used as a deck or file lock. It was usually a dealer installed accessory, as were many of the others, such as hood and trunk lamps. After a long wait for post war cars, the dealers wanted to jack up the price anyway they could.
