I'm installing a fel pro pan gasket on my 1951 239 v8 and it came with three rope seals and no instructions. I assume thick curved white rope is for front seal and thinner white rope is for rear seal, black flat rope must be for a different application. Is this correct and should the ropes be soaked in oil first? Thanks.

From info that I have gathered. I believe the white seals are a newer type. I used the white, and didn't have to trim any off. The black seals are too long, and will need to be trimmed to fit. I believe they are the older type. I soaked mine in oil. I have read where they have been installed dry also, so maybe flip a coin. This info is just to give you a starting point, I am not all knowing on the flathead. Good luck, and have fun. I also used the Felpro gasket set.

Soak the rope seal halves in motor oil well before installation. When I was a mechanic at the local Ford dealer years ago we always kept seals in a can of oil between jobs. Most seals now sold are the correct length, and shouldn't be trimmed. As the oil pan is installed the seal is pushed up into the groove and bulges enough to make the seal bear against the crankshaft.
