Topic: 35 Ford Steering Column Rotates Slightly

35 Ford Coupe steering column can shift slightly. Turn signal switch is mounted on column and column can rotate a little left or right when switch is moved down or up for a turn. What should I be looking at to secure column? Clamp or clamps?

Thanks.

Is it the stock column with the steering lock mechanism and switch? If it's stock you need to first make sure it is fastened securely to the dash. Then check the pinch bolt on the left side of the column lock. You'll see a split in the column lock bracket on the left side. Below the split there is a bolt that was used to tighten the lock mechanism around the column. It may be missing the bolt or over time the column has become loose from the lock bracket. If the original bolt is in there you may have to drill it out and replace. When first assembled Ford used a bolt that had a head that broke off once it reached a certain torque. Once drilled out and the threads cleaned up you can use an SAE allen bolt to replace it. I recall it's 5/16 NF. Sometimes you can use an "easy out" to remove the bolt , but be careful not to break the "easy out". That creates a whole new set of problems.

You can try tightening the column drop and the clamp at the bottom of the column.
