Is the passenger outside rear view mirror functional on a 1940 Ford or is it just for looks? Can you see it from the driver's seat. Thanks

Pass side hindge pin mirrors are mostly non-funchinal cant see much out of them. OMO ken ct (36 ford with them.)

Hello John, I can't imagine that the '40 is much different than the '46 but it's impossible to see the cowl mounted mirror from the drivers seat in my '46. Just something else to worry about getting broken off. I mounted one of those cheap, stick on fish eye mirrors on the top right of my windshield and it works fairly well.

The right side cowl mirror is useless. The hinge pin mirror can be of some use as I have one on my 41 pickup. The best set up for mirrors are the swan neck style that mount to the doors, but are definitely not stock.

John,
The authentic so called "swan neck" mirror for the right side of your '40 Ford was introduced darn near the end of the 1940 Ford production. It is, as you have found useless for anything other than aesthetics. I can only hazard a guess here but I would think aesthetics is exactly the reason Ford offered them so late in the run. Well, aesthetics and profit.

Once you get a mirror on the right side, buy a good convex mirror to stick to that mirror. It's no good for judging distance, but does show if anything is on that side.

I can't see the passenger side cowl mount mirror on my '40 coupe. I was going to leave it off but my navigator said she checked it whenever I started looking over my shoulder before I made a lane change.

I use the peep mirrors with convex stick on. I was wondering about a 6 volt backup camera. Anybody tried that? Drove a Chevy Volt this week with an aftermarket backup camera on the license plate. It even sounded an alarm when I got close to something and had a wide angle view.

Backup or rear view cameras are not a bad idea. They work especially good on a sedan delivery. Some are small enough that you don't really notice them. The small windows in the rear of an old Ford leave lots of blind spots.

I agree with just about everyone who responded. The right side mirror is essentially, non-functional. I do have one on my 40 Deluxe Sedan however, as it matches the one on the left side and tends to "balance the car".
At least, that is what I tell the judges.

Tom, I doubt any judges know that the right side mirror is not proper for cars built prior to March or so of 1940. At least not for now. Once my book is published, you may not remain as lucky
