Topic: Timing Cover

Went to install my timing cover today. 53 Flathead..During the test fit, with no gasket, the cover is hitting the camshaft distributor drive gear. There is a raised portion inside the timing cover, not sure what it is for, but it rubs against the gear. Any ideas or recommendations? I have rotated the engine over without the cover on. Would that have affected anything?

  Forward thrust on 8Ba engines.

Rotate the engine opposite its normal rotation direction. This will force the cam to the rear of the engine. The cover should go on then. There is a spec for the amount of back-and-forth cam movement. I forget the number, something in the .010" max range. About all you can do is play with gasket thickness or try different covers. For less clearance you can forgo the gasket and use a thin coat of gasket maker.

Thanks for the input. I assumed the raised portion inside the timing cover had a job to do. I will rotate the other direction as stated, and work from there. Thanks again.
