Topic: Heater switch getting hot

I am having an issue with the NAPA heater switch getting very hot. I replaced it today and the new one is doing the same thing as the old one. The motor speeds up and down as it should but the switch gets extremely hot and smells. The wires going to it do not get hot. The car is 6 volt system but the switch is a 12 volt. Any idea the problem?

6 volts needs more amperage than 12 volts ,, to do the same job, i would not use it. Check out ohms law on the web.

Totally agree with shogun. The wiring in the 12 volt switch is not designed to accommodate 6 volt current. Look on eBay and other sources for a 6 volt switch. I occasionally see used and NOS switches.

  Thanks, guess that's the problem.

Some switches have a built in resistor for fans with more that one speed. Resistors do get hot.
