All the original early V8 Ford script coils (except for a bus) are 6V and require a series resistor (0.5 Ohm). It is best to do this with the coil off the car. You need a digital ohm meter placed on the wire terminal (from the resistor) and on the terminal for the condenser to read the primary resistance ABOUT 0.6 Ohm and from the same wire terminal to the carbon brush for the coil secondary ABOUT 6. K ( or thousand) Ohm maybe as high as 10. K Ohm. Your looking for relatively large changes to these readings: Open circuits, short circuits and resistance about 25-50% out of range. So a 0.6 ohm primary is good where as 1.0 is bad on the coil primary. Always make sure your meter leads are connected securely on clean terminals for the best reading.
This is about all you can do at home without special equipment for a dynamic and or, an oven to heat the coil
