My wife is from New Zealand. It seems Kaikora, which is north of Christchurch on the east coast of the South Island got it the worst and was cut off from the rest of the country. Wellington sustained damage, but everything is holding together. Have not heard how Christchurch is doing

Receive an e-mail from my friend Dave Warman who lives in Christ Church.

He said Quote "all is well in our patch. At about midnight we had a rolling earthquake, not violent, that went on for at least a minute so, a bit unnerving, the main quake was about 150km north of here and was really severe [7.5]. I believe there were 2 people killed, lots of property damage, roads and rail out of commission and the cook strait ferry stuck at sea until the berthing facilities are repaired. There was a tsunami warning along the east coast with numerous evacuations but this is now downgraded as unlikely to occur".
