Topic: gas tank sealers

What type of sealer is recommended for sealing small amounts of rust in the tank? I have removed my 40 tank thinking that rust had stopped up the fuel line (original tank). When I put low pressure air through the fuel line a short plug of crud about 1/4 inch long came out.
I have looked inside the tank with a bore scope and it looks very good no rust that I can see. My problem is do I have the tank sealed or not. Any suggestions?

Don, if there is no rust, there is probably no reason to seal it. The most common areas of rust are where the baffles are spot welded to the tank. You can usually see this when you remove the sending unit.

The current Ethanol and gas mixture is very corrosive and if there is any rust, it will spread fast. If you can see any rust around the baffles, have the tank boiled out and sealed. I prefer Hirsch tank sealer. A radiator shop is a good place to have it boiled out. The sealer will not stop any current rust, so it must be cleaned.

If it is small amounts of surface rust, you could clean the tank, convert the rust to iron phosphate and seal the tank. Both Bill Hirsch andEastwood sells a kit for doing this.

Thanks Tom, a closer look through the sending unit hole shows some slight rust exactly where you indicated. It is not much but after the trouble I had getting the tank out I think it will be cleaned and sealed. There is a radiator shop about 60 miles distant that does them for around $85 and I have talked to satisfied costumers. They also are a Hot Rod shop. Thanks again!
