Topic: can greasing water pump create knock in 35 V8

I put one pump from a grease gun of Mobile 1 grease in the passenger side water pump while 1935 flathead V8 was running, and the motor ran for another minute or two and then I turned it off. Half an hour later I started the motor and it immediately had a knocking noise on the driver's side--back of engine. Anyone have ideas how the two things could be related? There were no prior engine problems--engine ran perfectly before this.

I think that it's just a coincidence. Let's say you had a bunch of cr*p in your grease gun and it somehow got into the pump bushing or bearing sure, you might ruin the bearing, but that would have nothing to do with the motor stalling a minute later. Also you state that the knock is to the rear of the motor, nowhere near the pump. A knock towards the rear of the motor could be several things including flywheel related issues. Take the belt off and start the engine and see if the noise is still there. While you have the belt off check the pump by hand. Let us know what you find.

I should have also mentioned that after I worked on the water pump, i drove the driver-side front tire up on two 2 x 4 blocks of wood (stacked) to provide more clearance under the car (I was going to work on the wiring for tail lights). there was no knock in the engine when I did that, but I had to back up and go forward a couple of times to get the tire up on blocks, and had to hit the brake abruptly to hold the tire position on the blocks. Still no noise in the motor and I shut it off, worked on the wiring and went to start car to drive off blocks and the knocking noise was there. I tapped on the starter bendix thinking it hung up but the knocking continued.
