Topic: 1936 water pump grease

What is the correct grease for 1936 water pumps. I've read to use a thin grease as it will not plug the radiator verses a heavy water proof grease which can plug the radiator when it cool. Any thoughts on which is best and which grease to use.

On Skips rebuilt pumps he recommends a LOW temperature grease. The idea is so the grease will melt during use and lube the bushings. I DO NOT use John Deere cornhead grease for U-Joints, but believe the water pump would be a proper application for it.
It is important NOT to overfill the pump cavity under pressure, this will result in forcing the grease past the seal. 36 had a couple of slightly different pressure release fitting for the lube. If your still worried about getting the lube in the coolant remove the lube fitting and use a small tube and Zerk fitting and place the tube all the way into the lube cavity and let the excess escape from the hole. When full replace the lube fitting.

Thank you. Never thought about greasing the pumps that way. When I put too much it does run past the seals resulting in grease being slung back on the engine and under hood.

  I agree with 40 Coupe's approach.

A syringe filled with corn head grease works very well on our '36. No problem with too much pressure.

It's great for topping up the steering box too.

The John Deere product number is AN102562.
