The 'dogbones' on my 1940 front suspension Houdaille shock absorbers come forward fouling the suspension travel when lowered to ground on my hoist. They are intended to go towards the rear & I wonder at the dogbone correct length? Both mine are around 4" center to center. My limited books don`t note the length. Thanks guys. Peter Hibbert. Australia.

Peter, Not sure of the correct length, but a possible solution here... Raise slowly to the point of vertical dogbone, then manually push the bone to the rear. They may have gone overextended at some time in the past.

G`day Alan. I appreciate your response. That is exactly what I have been doing for years with my son`s assistance with a pole but I need to resolve if the dogbone link is the correct length. I note the rear dogbones are longer & I wonder if I reversed them during my restoration? Thanks, Peter, AU.

Peter, the parts catalog calls for P/N 48-18055A a 3" long link. You also need the correct shock which would be one with the arm having a 10 stamped on it. If you have incorrect shocks, the link may have to be a different length.

If you could post a photo it would very helpful. The Chassis parts books call for 3" links both front and rear of the 85HP, even early charts call for the 3" but yet some believe 4" fronts. The chassis parts books call for the 4" on the front of the 60HP. The difference between the 85 and the 60HP is the 60 does not have the stabilizer. All the 40, 85HP cars have stabilizers from the factory.

G`day Tom. Responding as usual thanks! I will accurately measure the dog bone link & check the Houdaille arm forged stamping is "10" or not. As my 40 Coupe was a moonshine Ford, it may have been mucked with earlier.
Cheers from AU. Peter.

G`day Tom. I have measured the Houdaille arm lengths & the rear is 7" & front 6". Neither is stamped with '10'. Maybe I should have them the other way? I appreciate yours & others responses. Cheers mate. Peter. AU.

  G'Day Peter.

My car is a Mercury and the shock arms are different than the Ford, measurements on my car would not be the same as a Ford. Also we are having January weather this week, so I don't want to open the garage door.

Maybe Mike Kubarth can give you the shock arm length.
