Topic: air cleaner

Just bought a largely original 1940 Ford Custom Deluxe. Will have many questions as time goes by. I'm looking at what is under the air cleaner top part you lift off. There is a about 2 inch high cylindrical wire mesh piece inside. It had a about 3 inch piece of lightweight fabric hanging on it. Everything was dry. Books and catalogues I've looked at so far have not been helpful. I have deduced that 1) the wire mesh piece is THE cleaner element and that THIS is what is supposed to be coated in oil and that the fabric piece was simply not supposed to be there. But when I first saw piece the fabric, I thought that perhaps the wire mesh was supposed to be encased in a piece a fabric. Can you help me out?

The wire mesh is not enclosed in fabric. Some air cleaners had a piece of felt glued to the top to help silence the air flow and that is probably what you found.

Clean the element by soaking it in a degreasing solution long enough to remove the oil and dirt and then oil with engine oil. Let it drain on a paper towel before installing the element back in the cleaner housing.
