Topic: 59 AB heads

I picked up an engine today and one head said 59AB and the other one said just 59A. I'm guessing that the latter is a truck head.Am I correct? Is it different form the 59AB head?

The 59A head was used on the 1945 and 1946 engines, the 59AB was phased in during 1946. They were used in pairs, so both sides should be the same.

Thanks, Tom, I was guessing that since they had different numbers they were not the same. After 60 years, I still keep learning new things about these old flatheads.

The 2 part numbers are not the same. They were used in pairs, so both heads should have the same P/N.

I bought a 1946 Ford Super Deluxe Sedan Coupe in 1971 with 39,000 miles on it. I knew the original owner, the second owner who I bought the car from and had a large amount of information from the local Ford dealer. The engine had a 59 A and a 59AB head and I received my first deduction on this at the Valley Forge Pa meet in 1976. I was never able to convince V8 Club judges that was the way it came. If I had paper work showing in the 25 year before I bought the coupe about every oil change to instrument bulb change why was a head swap never noted? Another point I was deducted on was a hit on some poor body work, grinding mark swirils on rain gutter/roof area. This ws on a rust free lower body area.At the time I was and still am I guess the same age as the '46 and I asked the judge why would such an original car need body work at that area? My guess is and I know this was an early prewar trunk tool box '46 body it was stored quicky and came out quickly to get built. I will forever maintain the different head feature though.
