Topic: 49 merc engine into 48 ford

I am going to install a 49 merc engine into my 48 ford tudor. I am planning on using the 48-52 truck water pumps and my 48 exhaust manifolds, my question is about the clutch and flywheel, should I use 48 ford parts or 49 merc parts? are there any other issues I might face? Thanks

You will have to use the late flywheel with the late block. Use a clutch pressure plate that matches the flywheel and a clutch disk that fits the '48 transmission and is the same diameter as the pressure plate.

What 40 said.... If you try to use a 48, 59 series flywheel on a 49 8ba style engine, the starter will not mate properly with teeth on flywheel. You also must make sure you have the correct sheet metal starter mounting plate that goes with the bell housing you are planning to use. There is a complete tech article that covers all the bell housing and starter plate combinations. You can find this by Googling the Techno Site by BillB

Thanks 40 cpe & jm. have complete engine with flywheel, bell housing, plate and starter, The clutch disc from the 49 matched the splines on 48 trans, so I will get new 49 clutch assembly and proceed with install. thanks again for the input.

Have your clutch rebuilt by Fort Wayne Clutch. The current new clutches available are not as good.
