Topic: Main cap bolts

53 Flathead motor. I am tearing down my motor, and noticed a difference in the main bearing cap bolts. The number 2 and 3 cap bolts are smooth on the top, and have lockwashers. The number one bearing cap bolts have groves cut in the top of the bolts, and there is no lockwashers. Should the number one cap bolts have the lockwashers also? Thanks

Well, after more research, I located some info on Red's Vintage Parts. It has info on Ford's special fasteners. It includes the main cap bolts. The bolts are two different lengths. The bolts for the number one bearing are shorter, self locking, and no washers are used. I was glad to find this info, and hopefully it will help others. Cheers.

Yes throw away those lock washers and oil the treads and under the heads of the bolts with motor oil before installing and torquing. Most people don't realize that the stretch of the bolt keeps it tight when it is torqued. Since it was questionable how somebody else assembled this engine in the past, if you are not sure if the bolt is too long ( a possible risk of the bolt bottoming out and causing damage to the threads on the bolt or destroying the casting it's turned into) carefully turn it in finger tight only and check if there is a gap under the head of the bolt. If there is beware.
