Topic: 59AB engine ping/knock

I have a problem with engine ping/knock in my 59AB engine. Compression is good, burns no oil. Just had the distributor rebuilt by a reputable shop in FL. When I put the rebuilt distributor on the car, it ran good up until 38 mph in high gear (3.54 rear axle). But then there was a rattling sound or ping coming from the engine. Sounds like a modern day engine with low octane. I am burning premium fuel with no ethanol, and one cup of MMO per tank of gas. After finding no problems with a loose part or alternator, I decided to try and change the advance of the distributor. I am not a mechanic, so please bear with me. On the distributor is a screw with a mark on the left side. To the right is a part of the distributor that has nine marks. When the distributor was rebuilt, the left side mark lined up with the third line on the right. I turned the screw to the left and rotated the distributor so it lined up with the sixth mark. Took the car for a test drive and it ran good up until 45 mph and then started to rattle. Much improvement but still not right. So I moved the distributor to the final mark and now the car runs without any ping or knock up to 52 mph. it seems to be and ignition issue. Can anyone give me advice on how to diagnose/correct the problem? I think I am retarding the spark by adjusting the distributor, but I wonder is this is really solving the problem, or am I masking more significant problems by retarding the spark? Will also add that the knocking does not occur at lower speeds or when the engine in under load. If I step on the gas, engine sounds great. But if I let up on the gas above 52 mph, the knocking/pinging starts.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Your problem is more likely the vacuum advance rather than the initial timing. The attached image is the instructions for adjusting that. I'd put the initial static timing back where it was and crank the vacuum advance adjustment screw on the top of the distributor down a few turns at a time until the pinging is gone as per the instructions.

1 cup of MMO in the tank is probably too much. The recommended proportions are 4 ounces to 12 gal of gas. I would not add more then that amount to a tankful on a Ford.

I would also clean or replace the plugs before messing with the timing.

I would also check the dwell and use the ruler method to check the initial timing. If it is off, send the distributor back to be adjusted correctly.

Here is a link to the ruler method to set timing
