Topic: Aluminum Radiators

Last two restorations I have the original radiators re-cored as 3 and 4 pass units. perform well and look original. Seeing some cheap prices on new aluminum radiators. What is the performance experience with these? Can the be painted matte black to look more original, or does it hamper the heat transfer?

Here's a thought or two to consider with an aluminum radiator. Once there's a leak they are not repairable. They are cheap for a reason and most are made in China.
There is also a greater potential for electrolysis in the cooling system. I would much rather spend a little more money and get a copper/brass radiator. There's some decent buys on copper/brass radiators on e-Bay or with U.S. Radiator. We all like to save $, but there may be additional costs down the road on a cheap product.

I have used aluminum radiators with great success in several of my recent vehicle restorations.
While talking to a good friend that builds vintage race/performance cars, he told me about performance radiators that Summit sells for performance cars. They are intended for cross flow applications, however, the radiator does not know if it is standing up or laying cross-wise.
I have used these radiators in my '39 Plymouth, '37 GMC, '49 Olds 88 and a '65 Chevy pickup..
The only tricky part is getting a radiator that will fit the application, then ordering a radiator for a Ford for a GM application, and a GM type for a Ford application. The cross brand application puts the in/out tube in the proper position for the vehicle being worked on.
