Parts suppliers all sell the "600W" oil for transmissions, differentials, and steering boxes. Label says SAE 250. Ford shop manuals say for my 1948 F-1 say use summer 140W, winter 90W for trans, and 90W for diff. Multigrade gear oils, i.e. Napa or Valvoline SAE 90-140 would seem to be a better choice. Any reason to use the heavier stuff?

No, but there are lots of reasons not to. The 140 is the correct lube to use. Tom
