if you go straight to the starter with a heavy jumper cable and the starter works you know the starter is good. then go bac k to the solenoid and check to see if you are getting a signal from the button,, some cars supply positive voltage , and some supply the ground for the sol. to work

  Duke,

The stock 38 solenoid requires that the center post be grounded to energize the solenoid. You should have the NEG cable of the battery going to the drivers side of the solenoid, the starter button to the center terminal and the starter cable going to the passenger side of the solenoid.

You also need a good battery with heavy 6 volt cables.

You should also give us some ideas about your truck. Was it running band this just happened or did you just restore it and this is the first time that you are trying to start it or any other condition.

All good advice. Suggest, if you have not already, start with the most simple first - check all battery, solenoid, starter and ground connections for cleanliness & tightness plus as TomO notes correctness.

I have seen 2 fully restored cars that the owner simply put the negative cable on the battery and did not tighten it and it performed exactly as you described. Everything electrical worked and the gauge behaved as you described, but nothing but a 'click' on the crank attempt. Tightened the negative cable securely and they both started as designed. Hopefully your issue is as simple as this.

Steve

Your symptoms are classic and are usually caused by a loose (or corroded) battery connection as noted above by Steve.
