I have a 51 F1 pickup V8. I recently completely rewired the entire truck. Everything was great. Although I noticed that the starter button seemed to be touchy, you had to push it all the way in,, whereas it used to react to the slightest touch. Yesterday I went to start it and when I pressed the started button everything shut down, electric fuel pump, lights, everything. I disconnected the battery so I could monkey around with various things under the dash, but found nothing wrong. When I reconnected the battery the lights would work and I heard the fuel pump when I turned the key, but when I hit the button, everything shut down. I have ordered a new button, but is that all there is to it? The button won't be here for a few days. The button is so simple, I don't understand what could be wrong, or is it something else, a short elsewhere in the system, or in the ignition switch. Any help?

Here's what I would check, in this order: bad connections to battery, load test the battery, ground connections between engine and body. If you have replacement battery cable ends, they could be making a poor connection also check conections to soloenoid. By checking I mean remove each connection, wire brush it until it is bright,then re connect. I doubt that the starter button is the problem.

Clifford is probably correct. The high current draw of the starter is causing a poor connection to open up. Tom

Thank you everyone. You were right. The battery cable from the pos post to the solenoid was fractured inside the casing, and a power tester immediately located the problem. I NEVER thought of that. Many many thanks. Peter
