Topic: 1951 F-1 stamped number on firewall.

jch1960    -- 05-04-2015 @ 8:40 PM
I recently purchased a 1951 F-1. I have someone restoring it for me, and had the body media blasted. I believe it is an early production truck. The VIN tag does not have the paint code on it. There is a number stamped on the firewall. Can anyone tell me what the numbers on the firewall indicate? I really would like to know what color this truck was painted originally.
Thank you!

  jch,
Those cowl codes vary by assembly plant, especially in '50 and '51. For example, my '51 F1 V8 built in Chester Pa, was F1RCS25G63578 for F1, Chester Pa, built 25 July and production number.
yours, RHF1G5F5220. RH is plant in Richmond Hills Ca. I have a '53 built there. F-1. G could have been a color, Sea Island Green for cars in '51. 5F is June 5 build day and 5220 is production number. Do you have a metal tag of glove box door? Should show engine type, etc.

The tag on the glove box door and the one riveted to the firewall shows F1R1RH-17414 which I believe breaks down to Richmond built, 8 cylinder, 1951, and serial number. Is there a reason that the number stamped in firewall is different from the vin number?

jch, You are correct. As you may know it is Richmond Hills assembly plant in California. That G on the cowl stamp could have been the color as I mentioned. You can look behind the access plate on the door jambs just below the door hinge and check for original color. Most of them were painted originally.
Good Luck.

Also, is the cowl picture from the same truck with the tags and different production numbers?

June 5th was a Friday so it explains the crazy cowl codes. Mondays and Fridays were bad days for the line workers. Don

I agree. From the tags in the glove box and on the firewall one can tell that it is an F-1 with a V-8 (R) engine, 1951 (1) model and built in Richmond, CA (RH). The G on the cowl indicates sea mist green paint. 5F is 5 June 1951. 5220 was the production number for the Richmond plant.

It's a little odd that the engine type (R) was not stamped into the cowl.

The number stamped into the cowl was for in-plant use and didn't have to agree with anything else.
