Topic: Top Loader Gear Shift Removal Technique

I plan to remove a 4 speed transmission from a 1950 F2 that has been sitting and has no engine. Looking for a general description of the technique or reference for removing the stick shift from inside the cab.

Also looking for tips on performing a preliminary inspection on the transmission while it's out to see if there is anything obvious preventing the trans from functioning. Thanks in advance.

At the base of the gear shift lever where it goes into the shift tower there is a stamped steel "cap" holding the lever in place. It is half round and has a small flange at the base with two flat sides, use a pair of water pump pliers on the flange and unscrew the cap. There is a spring under the cap holding the ball on the gearshift lever down into the seat in the top cover. The transmission needs to be in neutral to remove the lever. Once the cap is unscr*w*d it will just pull straight out. There is a dowel pin through the side of the top cover where the cap screws on to keep the gearshift lever from turning around, watch for it, as it can fall out or fall down into the transmission. As far as inspecting the transmission, you can remove the PTO access cover on the side and the top cover, once you get the transmission out. Rinse the inside with solvent and you should be able to check it out fairly well.
