I have a 40 ford truck currently restoring . The shifter has a thumb switch / lever Is this some type of splitter ? Can anyone please tell me what this is for .Its just a half ton truck. Thank you jimmy

Jimmy: See response to your other question. Ford truck 4-speeds had these reverse lockouts until about 1944, when they simply added a stiff spring in the shift tower to keep you from selecting reverse accidentally.

This looks like the old 4 speed non syncromesh truck transmision. You have to double clutch every time you shift gears. For this reason you may not want to use it is your 1/2 ton pickup. A 3 speed would have the syncromesh gears.

Jimmy: Cliftford is right about the need to "double-clutch" those old 4-speeds. I grew up with them, and learned to shift them smoothly, although I'll admit that downshifting was something that simply took a lot of "stick-time". We had them in our "ton-and-a-half's", which we would regularly haul 18-20,000 lbs. of citrus fruit. They make beautiful "music" when heavily loaded in low or second, but if I had a half-ton, I'd sure opt for the 3-speed simply out of convenience.
