I have a 40 Pickup and am trying to find out the correct numbers.The first one is a 9.Then a C and 4 more numbers.I have checked and believe the C is for the half ton pickup, but not sure of the 9 and also only 4 number for the remaining serial number.It may be that it was that low of a production number.Can anyone shed some light on it.Thanks

The serial number should be on the frame near the steering box. The numbers that you posted do not fit the serial number range for 1940. Here is a link to the serial numbers used by Ford. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm Tom

As Tom op says the VIN # should be on the top of the left frame rail between the steering box and the front crossmember. I have found that on most 40's the number is very near the front crossmember. The number you give is not a 40 number. Perhaps the C could be a lightly stamped 0. there should be a star stamp at the beginning of the number and at the end of the number.

That is the only numbers that are on the frame ,none under the cab nor at the top on the frame at the rear end.I am aware of the stars,so the mystery goes on.Thanks

The title that I have is for a 40 pickup per the serial numbers,maybe it was lunch time as it rolled down the line and it was missed.

ok guys that seriel number is for a 4 cylinder tractor engine (introduced in 1939 hence the 9)and it did not come out untill 1941 and was only used for two years--very sluggish-I should know I have one, a snale on a good day can pass you. Could your truck actually be a 1941? Does it have a pressed in raised panel in the middle of the dash for a Ford scrip or does it have a bolted on plate with Ford scrip? 40's are pressed, 41-up are bolted on

It could very well be a 41,it does not have a raised dash for the ford emblem,nor was there a ford enblem or hole from one but there were 2 holes in the glove box door. When I bought it it had the larger ford emblem on the hood also.When we stripped the hood we found the smaller holes for the ford script.The frame does not appear to be modified,not sure what that would look like for a 4 cylinder.Also the frame does not have the dog house at the cross member that I believe was a change in 41 as per the 41-18 book for a stronger frame.I thought it may have been a late 40 or early 41 using different parts as they did.It has a 52-53 Merc engine,the trans has a 36 serial number,46 front and rear suspension,Columbia rear end.Sounds like a Johnny Cash song.The number that is on the frame is 9C7378 would that be the full number as there were only a few with the 4 cylinder engine and no stars on either side as on others.Thanks for your help.

If it has the later suspension you may have a 42 pickup. Does it have open drive? You cannot compare the frames listed in the club's 41-48 book to a commercial frame. The 41-48 book is strictly about passenger cars and commercials are an entirely different "animal".

The drive shaft is in the tube which is connected to the trans.The suspension has 11 leafs front and rear that are covered with metal and have grease fittings on them.It also has sway bar and a track bar front and rear.The shackle brackets are in the shape of a tear drop with a larger round part on the bottom and a smaller one in the top.The hood latch is for the 40 and the trim piece under the front of the hood nose are 40 as well as the v8 emblem.Thanks hope this will give more insight.

you have a 41 truck, the VIN#'s are correct for that year, the 41 pu frame is the same as 40 except in very late 41 they started putting 6 cylinder engines in the pu (very rare) if it is a very late 41 the front cross member has a definite curve down to accomodate the 6 cylinder but this was NOT need for a 4 cylinder engine, the two holes on either side of the hood were for a ford scrip plate-same plate as the dash, scr*pe off the bottom of the rear axle and give us the numbers on the banjo housing-could still have the 4:55 gear ratio. Ok,I wire wheeled the bango 2 inches either side of the drain plug, no numbers to be found.If indeed it is a 41 where would the serial numbers be in the club history because I have not been able to discover there hiding place.Also would it have been so late in 41 that they would have put a 42 suspension on it?The front cross member does have a definite curve in it,would the 6 still use the same motor mounts as the V8?I think the ratio may be a 3:78 as when John Connaly rebuilt the rear end.The speedo gear is 19 if that helps.Also does it matter if the drag link arm is from a 40 as the 42 has a big curve in it and I got one for a 40.Thanks Allen

engine. sorry I misread your post and thought the truck may have had the parallel leaf suspension front and back of the 42 pickup.. As you now describe it sounds like you have a 41 pickup. It doers sound like the truck may have the 42 passenger car suspension.

look for the numbers on the raised strengthening rib that runs from the bottom to the front where the closed driveshaft attaches. the "turtle" number for a 3:78 is 19-so apparently the rear was changed like mine was. The club "history" really does not have much on these trucks as they were rare, the V8 and the four and the six all had engine mounts to fit to the same frame location. I have a NOS six cylinder front crossmember that came with my truck. e-mail me direct if you want some pictures of my 41 trucks alan48@charter.net

Note, the V-8 Club has currently reprinted a book authored by Howard Towne dealing specifically with the 40-41 pickups. It covers many, but not all issues with the 2 trucks. It's only $10 and can be purchased on line.
