My 1953 Ford car rear gear is making a whining noise when on a load, also when coasting. I pulled the unit, gears look good, backlash is within tolerance and the wear pattern looks good. What could be wrong?

Just a guess, how do the bearings and bushings in the differential look? Also, are you sure that is where the noise is coming from?

I have yet to disassemble the bearings from the housing.I have however cleaned the unit and the bearings sound and seem to run smooth when turned by hand. I believe I'll put it on jack stands and put a stethoscope on the axles. Thanks guys for your input, it's been awhile since I have gotten into this area. I'll let you folks know how it turns out. Russ

Before you disassemble the differential, pull the rear brake drums to see if there is anything loose inside. We have found rocks and parking brake parts that make odd sounds. Gear problems usually show up as a noise when the power changes on the gearset, not constantly, and comes and goes at different speeds, generally near 50 mph. If you don't find anything suspicious, a dry pinion bearing set may be the cause. Pinion preload is tricky, and requires special tools and specs.
