Topic: flathead on an engine stand

Just heard, unconfirmed, that mounting a flathead on a typical engine stand may break the cast bell housing. Can I get confirmation on this? If the typical modern engine stand is not appropriate, what is best to use?

That's true with the earlier models up through '47 for trucks and '48 for cars. The last iterations, 8RT and 8BA, are o.k. on a conventional engine stand that connects to the back of the block. The problem with the earlier models is that the flywheel housing is part of the block. The block and flywheel housing combination extends so far forward that the weight causes the flywheel housing to crack under the load.

If you are mounting a '49 or later motor on an engine stand you are O.K.(you mount it minus the bell housing). It's the earlier motor that needs additional support, so as not to possibly break the integrated bell housing.

You can purchase an Engine Stand Adapter which enables you to mount the earlier Flathead V-8s on a conventional engine stand. These adapters mount to the exhaust flanges on the side of the engine. They are available from Red's Headers as item #459 for $99.00. Another source is Stumpy's Fabrication Works in IL. I don't have good contact information for Stumpy's.
