Does anyone make an aftermarket AM/FM Radio for a 1949 F-1 Pickup Truck? Must be 12 volt and fit into the dash as the original did. Any information would be appreciated...........

Thanks trjford8! Checked out the site and unfortunately they only have radios for 1950-51 Ford Pickup Trucks. Need that 1949 fit. Real neat offerings though and prices didn't seem too bad! I'll have to tell my buddies.

Why don't you get a 49 Mercury radio and have it converted. There's plenty of places that do that. THe merc radio is identical to the truck except it has a chrome face and mounting brackets are way different. If you do an internet search for "48-50 Ford truck radio brackets" , you should see a drawing with dimensions to make them. THe 48-50 radios were the same and 51-52 were different. I put a Merc radio in my 50 F-1 and made the brackets. You can't tell it was in a Merc originally. I took te chrome off the bezel and painted it beige, like the speaker cover. THe original truck radios are rare and in the 3-500 dollar range, while a Merc radio runs $100-150.00 range.

There's no difference between a '49 radio and a '51-'52, at least appearance-wise. I have a '49 Zenith (9ZF) in my '51 F-1, and you wouldn't know it was a '49, if I didn't tell you. Some of the internals and manufacturers are different, but all of the radios look the same. They used the deluxe car radio with 8 tubes and chrome knobs. The mounting hardware is undoubtedly different, but I initially mounted my radio w/o the truck adapter kit. I found a kit later. The kit allowed installing the car radio in the truck, and, basically, includes parts for mounting the speaker, the brace that braces the back of the radio to the cowl and the antenna. You can fabricate something that will work. Look in the factory service manual for '49-'52, and you'll see that they are all the same.

If you have an old radio and want FM, there are people that can convert the old radio to play AM-FM, and you can't tell it is converted from the outward appearance.

THe car radio in 49 was the same as the 51-52 truck years. It's the truck radios for 48-50 I was referring to. If you wanted to use the 49 car radio, you needed one of the 2 kits that either mounted it in the dash or the more common one that bolted under the dash.

Maybe my response, above, wasn't very clear, but what I was telling you is that the radio used in the trucks in 1949 was, for all practical purposes, the same radio used in the trucks in '51-'52. You can fabricate whatever you need to install the radio in either truck. The main mounting of the radio is accomplished where the controls penetrate the dash. Essentially it is bolted to the dash by the controls, like most radios of the time. If you had a '49 adapter kit, you could use it with either the '48-'50 or the '51-'52 radio.
