Topic: 1946 Frame ID Number

I have a '46 half-ton pickup. Does anyone know if the number stamped on the left side of the frame near the steering box will provide any information about where or in what month the truck was built? Also, is there a database somewhere that will give me any info on the history of the truck? Thanks for any help you can give!

Unless you can trace back the previous owners there is not much chance of getting a history of your truck. You might check with your state to see if they retain any old records of registered vehicles, but chances are slim as most states have purged their records. They usually keep unregistered vehicles on file for 5 years.
You vehicle ID number should be on top of the left frame rail between the firewall and the front crossmember. Most likely you will find it near the crossmember.

While there no definitive way to tell build location or exact date...you can infer the date from the chart listed here: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm
For example...we know that 1946 model year ran from July 1945 to February 1947. That's a production run of roughly 20 months. If you look at the numbers for Ford/Merc V8 production...we can see roughly 762,000 cars and trucks produced in 1946 MY. That works out to be about 38,000 units per month. If you take the starting VIN number and count up by 38,000/month from there, you might be able to estimate what month your truck was built. If it was a 6 cylinder....it's much easier...since they only produced 98,000 total 6 cylinders. However....keep in mind this is a very rough estimate...since we have no way of differentiating cars from trucks, and which plants were given which lot of serial numbers.

You can use dates stamped on the instruments and the date code on the glass to narrow down the production date.
