I am restoring a 36 Pickup and trying to stay as original as possible. However, I would like to get a taller gear for the rear end...maybe a 3:78? What is the standard gear ratio? Where is the best place place to find a taller gear? Thx Steve

3.78 is a good all round ratio, you won't be disapointed in that choice. I would suggest that you find a banjo complete with that ratio, a much easier switch than replacing only the gears. Important in this choice is the condition of the pinion bearings, of course. Your '36 axles with spider gear, and axle housings will bolt up with no modification, and a ten spline to 6 spline coupler, Ford part # 48-4684 is available at many vintage Ford suppliers. The banjo itself may also be had from one of these suppliers, as well as from swap meets. This is by far the most economical and easiest way to go while remaining original, as the later banjo is almost identical in appearance and dimensions. Alan

I was considereing a 3:54 but 3:78 sounds like the best all around ratio. Many thanks! Steve

Steve, a 3:54 will be satisfactory with the stock 36 engine in flat country. If you drive in hilly country you should get the 3:78. If you have a later 100 HP engine, the 3:54 will be fine everywhere except the mountains. Tom
