My question is what causes the trans to jump out of 2nd gear, on or off the throttle. How do I fix? This is on a 1937 Ford pickup truck. T's Norm Rodenkirch

Odds are one of your transmission thrust washers is worn, or broken. These are washers that are at the end of the main shafts and they hold the gears in place. I had a 1937 60 hp that continually worn down one of the washers and like you say, it came out of 2nd gear whether on the throttle or not.
It's either 7128 or 7129 that you need to replace. Check the Ford Chassis Parts book. Places like Little Dearborn Parts in Minneapolis MN has them.

I agree about transmission wear, but of it jumps out of both pulling and coasting, I'd pull the top of the box and check the levers, blocker, and forks for excess wear. Jumping out of gear when coasting is often a symptom of failure to fully engage the gears. Jumping under load is often due to worn thrust washers, as mentioned. Failure to keep the oil level checked is common, and will cause damage wear.
