I recently bought a 47 Tonner Express. Does anyone know if the front fenders on a Tonner are the same as 1 1/2 & 2ton truck? Is the box the same box found on a 48 F2 Express? The Tonner I bought does not have a tailgate, does anyone have demensions of the proper tailgate? Is there anyone that has restored a 47 Tonner Express that would be willing to talk with me about thier restoration? Thank you for your feedback!

rawlir: I believe you will find that there are some differences between 47 light truck, and "heavy" truck" front fenders. I can't give you the specifics, but the wheel opening is much larger for the 1-1/2 ton and 2 ton to allow for the 20 inch wheels. The overall shape, profile, is similar, but I believe the larger truck fenders were also wider. Good Luck with your quest, and I hope some truck-types will chime-in.

rawlir; In James K. Wagner's book Ford Trucks Since 1905, it appears that the wheel openings are larger in the 1.5 and 2 ton. I have 1939 Tonner and the wheel openings just fit the 700-17 tires so I would think they would be bigger for 8.25-20 or 900-20. I have a hydraulic dump box so can't comment on the tail gate. I'll measure the wheel openings and next time I see a 2 ton I'll check.

Thank you both for your feedback! I too, hope some 46-47 truck guys will join this discussion! So far I cannot for sure tell the difference between my 47 Heavy Duty truck fenders and my Tonner front fenders but I do think you are right and they are a little different. Stroker, I will try to contact the lead you gave me, He is just the type of guy I would like to correspond with. I anyone knows any 46-47 Tonner folks, I would live to chat with them! Gracias! Rick

Rawlir, I have my Dad's '47 tonner, the front fenders are the same as the 1.5 & 2 ton trucks. My dad bought the truck about 1960, it was originally sold in Pennsylvania in 1948 so it is titled as a '48 truck. I don't have the original bed , but I have a '40 or '41 tonner bed that my dad had on the truck. I can measure the tailgate on that for you if you would like. Mark Poley

one thing to remember is that the front axle changed for the tonner to the 1 1/2 ton and the spring pack is taller, thereby moving the wheel/tire down from the top of the fender-giving more room for the 20" tires, I have a 3/4 ton 1941 with the stake bed and the fenders are the same for it and all the way up to 1 1/2 ton trucks

Alan & Mark, Thank you both for your feedback and info. I have measured both my Tonner fenders and my 1.5 flatbed front fenders and I connot find a decernable difference. Mark, I would very much appreciate if you would measure the tailgate for me, Thank you so much! Do either of you know if ALL Tonner beds from 44-50 were the same?

rawlir, I measured a tailgate for a '51 F2-F3 and it is 54 7/8" wide edge to edge excluding the chain eyes. I will get the measurment from the '40-'41 tonner bed as soon as I can, I'm down in my back and it is out behind my shop. rawlir, I measured the '40-'41 tonner tailgate today. It measured 54 9/16" wide edge to edge excluding the chain hook eyes. That is only 5/16" narrower than the '51 tailgate I have, so the tailgates are probably interchangeable to at least '51. I hope ths helps, Mark
