I just picked up a 50 ford f1 is there any difference between the 48-49 and 50 trucks

Mechanically there is little difference, but the trim is quite different.

The engines underwent a big change in late '48 when the 8BA type was used. That is the engine with the "posthole" distributor instead of the former front mount, that became the engine used in Ford cars thru '53 with some minor changes such as belt width. The 8RT engine was almost identical to the 8BA, but used the old style motor mounts, and like the cars, had water outlets on he front of the heads instead of the middle. As Tom said, the rest was mostly cosmetic.

The exterior trim was the same from 48-50. 51 had it's own trim and 52 was slightly different from 51. The 48-50 are very hard to determine the year unless by serial number. The 48 had cast F-1-F-6 emblems.49 and on were stamped. The 48 speedo pointer was chrome or stainless. 49-50 were painted. The division bars were painted. There are a few more differences, but use the serial number to tell the year.

There is hardly any difference. The '48 - early '50 models had the old bed and the gear shift in the floor along with the parking brake. The late '50 model had the later style bed and had the gear shift on the column and the brake under the dash on the left side, all like the '51 model. You can find different combinations of gear shift/parking brake and bed. Other than that, the differences were minor.

  New member here.

Beg to differ Barry, but at least the 1949 F-2 trucks had a diecast cowl emblem (I own a '49 F-2). When they went to the stamped stainless steel emblems, I am not sure, but I am thinking it was in '50.

It would be interesting to do a compilation of the various changes between the 48-50 models. I have read through the service manual, and have noted on many occasions some note stating how a particular component or system changed from a previous year.

I remember being rather surprised some years ago when I saw a 1950 F-1 with an all steel bed. I had always assumed they were all wood.

Speaking of the parking brake, on the '49 F-2 models with the optional heavy duty 3-speed, the brake handle was located under the left side of the dash as in later models, and not in the more familiar floor location. According to the service manual, the output shaft brake drum on the tranny was never used on the heavy 3-speed.

jdleach- I had a friend who had a 49 F-2 in high school in the early 70's and the emblems were stamped out, not cast. I think it may have depended on assembly plant suppliers. His truck was original and had never been apart other than 2 engine changes.

I would tend to agree regarding regional differences. In Ontario, California in the 50's was a company named Western Molding, that supplied the regional Ford plants with
emblem items. I've seen trim materials and items such as emergency brake construction vary from region to region. You can bet that whoever supplied the local plant with
emblems was the low bidder.

I have enjoyed all the comments on this question, the 50 f1 i have is a v8 has the e brake on the left side and has the steel all steel bed, it has heavy duty trans, and a hole in the steering colum for the colum shift and a plug in the floor for the colum shifter, the emblims are stamped. it has no throttle cable or even a place for it. my 51 had a throttle cable and my 52 had a plug in the dash for the cable. did the 50's not have a throttle cable. thanks guy's

If my memory serves me correctly, the 49 and 50 models did not use a throttle. Furthermore, there is no provision for attaching a throttle cable to the dual down draft carburetor used on the 239 V8 in those years, at least no 7RT/8RT carburetor I have ever seen.

My parts book seems to verify that '48-'50 models don't have throttles. My '51 does have one.
