Topic: '37 Pickup Crossmember 5019

ColoradoCabin    -- 01-30-2012 @ 7:22 AM
Looks like I'm going to have to rebuild or replace the front crossmember on my '37 Pickup I just bought. Some jakeleg did a number on it and I'm going to have to pull the engine and either replace or rebuild the crossmember. Part is 5019 on Page 145 of the Ford Chassis Parts Catalogue. Any suggestions? Are those parts still available anywhere? Anyone replaced one?

Thanks,
Charlie

Follow up....I found a '37 cross member and have sent for it. Reasonable price and "in excellent condition".
Now to get the old one off. Plan to go ahead and pull the engine and probably replace it with a rebuilt one I plan to buy from a friend.

Finally got the old crossmember out of the pickup and the replacement back in. Now to bolt the new one in with cap bolts and start putting stuff back. Gives me a chance to fix things better than when I bought it.
Still struggling with how to convert the banjo steering wheel horn to one without the horn rod...which was removed along with the light switch body and housing. Any suggestions? Right now I just have a pushbutton taped to the column...

Colorado, Don't use bolts. There are no bolts that will perform well in this application. Rivets are what you need, and here's the place to get them:

Horn light rods are available, as are most anuything you need for an old Ford.

Thanks for the suggestions Alan. I have bolted the crossmember in, however, after enlarging the rivet holes one size larger. I believe it will be fine with the bolts and locknuts. As far as the horn rod I would rather not do that...there is no wiring on the bottom of the steering box and I plan to put a plate over the opening. Would be nice to "go original" but there are far to many things "not stock" to attempt a correct restoration.
