I am restoring a 1951 F-1 Ford pickup, and would like information on painting various parts, such as under the hood, firewall, side panels under the hood, etc. Should all of those be body color? Also, should the air cleaner, oil filter, radiator shroud, and other parts under the hood be flat black or semi-gloss black? Appreciate any help.

The hood and firewall are body color. THe side panels, hood baffle, rad shroud and other parts you mentioned are all semi gloss black. THe latch panel is black also. Rad support and those 2 small panels for the light wires, etc... to go thru are black. Barry 50 F-1

bonusbuilt1950, I'm not sure what you are referring to as the "latch panel." On the '51 model, the part of the hood that holds the striker bolt (called a "dowel" in the parts book) is part of the hood (it's welded to it) and is body color. The part that supports the latch is the upper grille and it is also body color. If you have a V-8, the engine does not extend as far forward as the six. This causes the radiator to be mounted farther back, leaving a gap between the lower grille part, part number 1C-8188 and the radiator. There is an insert called an air deflector, part number 1RC-8208, that closes up the gap between the lower grille part and the radiator. That part is also painted semi-gloss black. Thanks for your reply. Another question - I have read that the engine in the '51 F-1 Ford pickup is either bronze or orange. (V/8 engine). Do you know which is appropriate?

I agree w.Michael. Ford truck engines were red from 1948 through 1951. They changed to green for 1952-53. (Ford car engines were generally dark blue in 1949 and changed to bronze in late '49 production through 1951. For 1952 and 1953 the Ford car engine was either tangerine red or green.) I never found anyone who could tell me the exact color of the red truck engines. I had an original bell housing that had red specs on it. I'd describe it as medium dark red. I used a color of spray paint that I got at Walmart that is no longer available. It was Dupli-Color Truck Paint in Carmine. It was just regular paint, but it has never darkened from the heat, and it hasn't flaked off after about ten years. Richard
