Topic: 1937 pickup stake and bed color

Anybody got an idea what color the wood in the bed and stakes should be on a 37 1/2 ton stake pickup? Should it be black? Or body color? I see most of the restored truck beds lately are a natural stain/poly, but doubt that is the way Henry did it. The wood in the bed is painted black, stakes are red, both all original wood and hardware, as far as I can tell. Bryan

Tyhe wood stakes and bed should be painted black. I got a point reduction at one of the shows.

Thanks zimmgin. Can't get any better confirmation than that.

Most of the non-pickup beds were dealer installed. Primarily, in our area, the Midwest, they were products of Omaha Body (Obeco), and the sides were either black or red. Very few were "Ford" bodies, with the script embossed on the back side of the bed. I'm not a judge of any kind, but I believe that the flatbeds would be very difficult to reject as "non stock", given this history. I happen to like the varnished type of stakes, as it reflects the care of those who restore these old trucks.

I'll side with Zimmgin, assuming (as Supereal has noted) that the platform stake bed is a Ford.
All Ford stake beds (floor, siderails, and rear bolster were painted black.

Thanks Supereal and Stroker for your comments. Our truck isn't totally correct anyway as it has a 59AB engine in it, and I don't know yet whether the tranny is right or not, so it'll probably be a driver anyway.
