  I was closing off the heater hose valve on my flathead today, twisting the valve stem until the whole thing came out of the block. As it turned out, the valve seat has a reverse thread into the engine block, so that as you close the valve (twist it clockwise) the brass seat it is in is therefore apt to turn with it as you get tighter down. The brass seat is reverse threaded in the block and therefore, if you are not careful, you can inadvertently unscrew it, splashing coolant all over the place.

Happened to me today. I did not know about this reverse thread. I wonder why they did that??? Anyone?

  My heater valve screws in clockwise. I've never seen one that screws in counterclockwise. How were you able to turn the valve in the block with the hose connected to it?

  the brass fitting that the valve is set in has the hose on the side so that the valve stem goes down the center
