Hi I have a Ford Truck 1940 and have got problems with headlight , it has stopped working. It shone weakly,varying and then stop completed How does the system works ? Headlight circuit braker problems ? The battery indicator works only if the battery is fully charged and then its go to zero Any tips on where to find the problem Best Regards from Sweden

If only one headlight is affected, it is likely the headlight has a poor ground. If both are affected, it is commonly a bad connection in the wiring, or the dimmer switch is defective. As for charging, the meter will fall back to zero if the battery is charged to a level above the generator output. If you turn the headlights on, the ammeter should show discharge.

In that case, I'd follow the circuit into and from the switch, through the dimmer switch, and out to the point in the circuit when they branch off to the headlights Insert a voltmeter between the ends of each leg of the circuit, and you should see where the loss is occurring. I'd bet on the dimmer switch, or one of the many connections to the thing.

How old is the wiring? If it's old wiring there could be multiple problems. If the wiring is good or new then I agree that there is some issues with bad grounds. Do you have a new or old battery?

Here is a link to a wiring diagram and a wiring schematic. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_drawings_electrical.htm The circuit breaker is located on the inside of the fire wall near the left side of the car on a block with the ignition resister. These circuit breakers seldom fail, the light switch and the dimmer switch fail much more often. If you have the original Battery Gauge with the red, orange, green and red bands, it is a voltmeter and will read the battery voltage when it is wired correctly. The first red band goes from 2 volt to 6 volts, the orange band is from 6.2 volts to 7 volts, the green band is from 7.1 volts to 8 volts and the final red band reads over 8.25 volts. When the battery its full loaded the lights its ok but after some seconds its will die after a while when the truck runs it can cameback some seconds

Are you sure that your battery is good? Check the voltage at the battery when the lights do not work. It should be at least 5.5 volts with the lights on. If it is less, then your battery is bad or not charged. Tom
